Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare on Desert Locust Control

Locust is the species of short-horned grasshoppers which comes under the family Acrididae that have swarming phase. Locust poses a huge danger to the crops as they eat the plant material. They multiply rapidly and can do a great deal of damage to crops.

The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar interacted with representatives of the pesticide Manufacturing Industry on the Desert locust issue.

New machines are ordered from the UK to tackle the menace which should arrive soon.

Despite the lockdown, the Locust Control offices are working since April 11, 2020 with 50 spray equipment /vehicles. Tractor mounted sprays and fire-tender vehicles are deployed at various locations are being used to control locust.

Due to the steps taken by the ministry Locusts have been controlled in more than 14,000 hectares of land in Rajasthan and Punjab.
