Neera toddy is extracted from the palm tree before sunrise and is used as a nutritious health drink in many states of India. Now the central government has prepared a plan to increase Neera’s business.
The government says that it has immense employment potential. Now the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has started a unique project to produce neera and palm jaggery. The purpose of this project is to promote Neera as an alternative to soft drinks, this step will create new jobs for the people associated with it. The project was launched on 16 June in Palghar Dahanu, Maharashtra, there are more than 50 lakh palm trees in the area, the government says that it has not yet been able to expand the business due to lack of technology.
The project has been started on the initiative of Union MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari says that to increase the use of Neera as a soft drink, it is being considered to include some big companies of the state so that it can be commercialized. In Palghar, KVIC distributed tool kits to 200 local artisans for extracting neera and making jaggery which were trained for 7 days by KVIC. This tool kit includes food grade stainless steel embroidery, perforated molds, canteen burners and other tools such as knives, ropes and axes to remove neera. This initiative will provide direct employment to 400 local traditional animals.
Significantly, there are about 10 crore palm trees across the country. In addition, if marketed properly, products like sweets, milk chocolate, palm cola, ice cream, and sweets can also be prepared from neera. Currently, palm jaggery neera worth Rs 500 crore is traded in the country. With the commercial production of Neera this turnover is likely to increase manifold. KVIC has prepared a detailed project report on the production of Neera and palm jaggery. In which standardized collection, processing and packing of Neera should be started, so that it can be saved from spoilage.
KVIC says the emphasis is on promoting Neera as an alternative to soft drinks available in the market. Palm industry can be a major creator of employment in India. It is also associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s self-reliant and vocal appeal for local.
In addition, Neera also has immense export potential, as it is also consumed in countries such as Sri Lanka, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman & Diu, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have a lot of palm trees in India which can make India a leading producer globally.
